Q: What Is the Hardest Thing About Weight Loss?
    Toni said:
Remembering that it took time to put on the extra weight, it also takes time to take it off. So it would be patience…

A from Boyd: Toni makes a good point. Patience is not just a virtue, it is the ONLY way you will keep any pounds you do lose off. If you are set on losing 2 pounds or more a week, your body will react by working hard to regain them. There is a lot of science on why that is so, and how it works. But, the key is to take it slow and steady. That is how the tortoise beat the hare. And that is how to make sure you beat the weight loss cycle of gain-lose-regain.

Thank you Toni for that observation. Patience in weight loss is a key virtue. So, instead of beating yourself up about the time it takes to lose all those extra pounds, congratulate yourself that you are doing it the right way. It says you are smart and wise. So, don’t let it discourage you. Celebrate slow and steady weight loss.

MY QUESTION TO THE GROUP: What do you all think about this very key subject…is patience in losing weight a virtue in your observation?

  7. Yogurt is a GREAT food…IF…IF it is yogurt. Unfortunately much of what is out there has high fructose corn syrup in it. Or “natural” sweetners, meaning sugars. Or it is made of soy. Or, it has lot of sugary fruit in it.

  8. Raye Wiedner says

I definitely think patience is of utmost importance. I’ve seen so many people use fad diets to lose weight quickly. It tends to come back just as quickly! The people I’ve watched successfully lose and maintain their weight loss made a lifestyle change rather than following a fad. They lost it slowly and feel much better doing it.

  9. What you are looking for are brands that are high in protein–usually Greek style. No added sugars or sweetners of any kind. and you want those that have live bacteria…at least 6 or 8 of them. But if they have live bacteria, the sugar in the fruit will kill the…so having fruit mixed in is a no-no..Fruit on the bottom is OK.

    • Karen Hinkle says

ok because I never eat it before now and I found some I like so I have been putting it in my diet

Q: What Is the Hardest Thing About Weight Loss?
    Rachel said:
When you are the only one in the house who is interested in healthier food!

A from Boyd: Being alone in your quest for health sucks. Sadly, this is a very old story. Sometimes the people you live with can be downright hostile to your efforts. Many report that they get teased about eating healthier.

So what to do? First, decide if you are losing weight for yourself, or for them? If you are losing weight for them, apologize to them for being so silly and out of line trying to eat different. Ask them what they would prefer you to ea. I’m sure that will silence them, right?

But if you are losing weight for yourself — and that is the primary reason you should be doing it — the ONLY reason you will keep doing it long term — then you have your answer.

Weight loss efforts are never easy doing it alone. So you have THREE very important options, Rachel:

Decide that you are worth it… that being healthier is your personal quest and no one else has the right to take that away from you.

MY QUESTION TO THE GROUP: Doesn’t that seem like the best place to get started? What do the rest of you think?

  11. Raye Wiedner says

I think anything you do as far as lifestyle changes have to be for yourself or you’ll never stick with it. Changing your eating habits is a big lifestyle change. If the other people in your house see you being successful and feeling better, they may decide to join you after all. Maybe with baby steps at first.

  12. Baby steps is absolutely the right thing to do.

  13. Any online groups you guys have found to work for you?

  14. Celebrate Woman says

Q: What Is the Hardest Thing About Weight Loss?
    MY 3RD OPTION FOR RACHEL:
The third thing you can do is understand why people in your house may not support your goal of eating healthier, and exercising more. In my experience, people you are close to can become afraid THEY are losing something when you make a big life change. They can feel threatened by your efforts…maybe you will leave them behind…maybe you will force them to change…maybe you will be more attractive to other people…

So, the third option of what to do when others in your home don’t support you is to reach out to them. Show them by your words and deeds that you are not loving them less, or trying to change them. Only that you are trying to love yourself more. And they have nothing to fear about that.

MY QUESTION TO THE GROUP: How would you suggest someone handle not having support at home? What has been your experience with this very real problem? How can you turn this problem into a strength?

  15. Karen Hinkle says

I have my sister and my hubby and my kids but I never thought about online groups that’s a great ideal

  16. Raye Wiedner says

I haven’t found any online groups yet (this is my first). I do have two daughters who are my cheering section though. I have friends who are trying to lose weight, and/or maintain weight….we try to encourage and support one another through good and bad., and celebrate each accomplishment or goal reached.

  17. Remember that set backs are not uncommon. But, keeping going is the key.

    • Raye Wiedner says

I think if we have supportive people around us, those setbacks seem a little less drastic. We can all encourage one another to keep at it and not give up just because we ‘fell of the wagon’ or hit a plateau.

  18. Celebrate Woman says

Q: What Is the Hardest Thing About Weight Loss?
    Cynthia said
    : Keeping it off.

Carol said: Commitment to diet and exercise.

Abbie said: Losing the weight and sticking with it!

Karen said: Just to get motivated is what I need.

Elizabeth said: Hitting the plateau – so hard to stay motivated at that point.

    Gayle said: Keeping it off.

Shelly said: Losing the weight and keeping it off.

A from Boyd: Each of you have hit on a problem we all have. And it is a problem that is very real. From my observation, it is the biggest problem of all:
    — MOTIVATION, to get started.
    — MOTIVATION to keep losing weight long term.

Motivation to get started comes in many shapes and sizes. We will talk more about that on another day. It is a real barrier that needs careful examination, and we will need to do that in a separate discussion.

Motivation over the long haul is the biggest culprit. Some days we are up. Some days we are down. Somedays we don’t know if we are up or down. Right? So you have to start there.

I can tell you that looking at pictures of newly skinny people is de-motivating, once you get started at losing weight. You feel that, “Well they did it, why can’t I?” Right?

I’ve spoken to a lot of experts on this subject over the last 20 years about this. Plus, in our ScaleDown program we had tens of thousands in it over the years. I have talked to hundreds of those who successfully lost weight and kept it off. But, I have also been heavily influenced by those who quit trying.

This is how I boil down long term MOTIVATION to keep you losing weight long term. It is summarized in your answers to the following four questions:

    — What are your beliefs about the CONSEQUENCES TO YOURSELF of you losing significant weight?

    — What are your beliefs about the CONSEQUENCES TO OTHERS of you losing significant weight?

    — What are your beliefs about the REACTIONS YOU HAVE TO YOURSELF to losing significant weight?

    — What are your beliefs about the REACTIONS OF OTHERS to you losing significant weight?

When you can’t find good answers to ALL of these FOUR Questions, you are not going to make it. You will try. you will work hard at it. But, UNLESS YOU CAN HONESTLY FEEL VERY GOOD ABOUT YOUR ANSWERS TO ALL FOUR OF THESE, IT IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE A STRUGGLE.

Motivation for long term weight loss? You have to feel that you are worth it. You have to feel that in spite of the short term reactions of others, YOU LOSING SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT WILL BE THE BEST FOR THEM TO.

Can you see the strength of that? Can you feel how long term motivation is about how worthy you feel you are to lose weight, PLUS how you know that in the long run it is the best for those you love to?

MY QUESTION TO THE GROUP: What do you think about this idea of motivation?

  19. Karen Hinkle says

I think she might have to reach out side her family it may be hard at first but we all need someone to be there for help and encouragement and when your family see that you are happy and feeling good about your self they will join in

  20. Success breeds success. But some family members, and some friends get threatened by your progress. So be aware that not everyone views your success as a happy event. The key is being patient with them.

    • Karen Hinkle says

yes they do but you have to do what is right for you and being healthy is most important in the long run

  21. Rebecca Swenor says

I have found that when others see you doing and sticking to it, they will usually follow.

  22. Celebrate Woman says

Q: What Is the Hardest Thing About Weight Loss?
    Heather asks:
What to eat? I don’t like salads and a lot of the healthier foods cost more. I also get discouraged when I don’t see progress.

A from Boyd: I’m guessing, Heather, that you already know about fat and calories and the type of traditional things people look at to control their weight. But before we can talk about food, let’s talk about why you are trying to lose weight. Get real clear with yourself about your “why.”

Then, ask yourself what you are willing to change to lose weight? Said differently, what are you NOT willing to change to get to a healthier weight? That is a foundational question that you need to also be clear about.
It is these internal conversations each of us need to have with ourselves, by asking questions that get to the root of what is holding you back. Once you have clarity, and you know what you re, and are not willing to do, you can formulate an action plan around whatever you come up with at that point.

MY QUESTION TO THE GROUP: What would you advise Heather to do?

    • Raye Wiedner says

One of the most important things to me was to learn proper serving sizes. What I thought they were, was not correct.
Once you learn correct portion control, you realize you don’t have to eat only ‘rabbit food’. You can eat a lot of the same foods you love in moderation.
I usually try to make fruits and vegetables a large portion of my meals, so they fill me up and I don’t eat as many servings of food that will pack on pounds.

    • Karen Hinkle says

eat more greens and less starchy foods and more protein foods and don’t go for fast foods that’s the worst

    • Rebecca Swenor says

You have to want it for yourself is number one. It doesn’t matter to much what you eat as long as you stick to smaller portions and it cant be a bunch of junk food or sweets.

  23. Raye Wiedner says

One of my best friends had a husband who sabotaged every attempt she made at weight loss. When she finally realized what was going on, they had a very in depth conversation about why. He was afraid if she lost weight, she’d be more attractive to other men, and he’d lose her. It took reassurance on her part that she wanted to look and mostly feel better for herself, and to be healthier and happier in her own life. She’d still love only him, but she wanted to be better. It really opened up the doors of communication for them and strengthened their marriage.

  24. Karen Hinkle says

you sure do have some great advice I just got the Gazzelle and I don’t mind being on it so what advice do you have for beginners

  25. Sadly, the “threatened husband” is a common refrain. My observation is that the faster a woman loses weight, the more threatened some men become. I actually write a long piece on that for a publication some years ago. If anyone is interested, I’ll see if I can dig it out and put it on here.

    • Raye Wiedner says

I’d definitely be interested in the article Boyd. She’s not the only friend I have who went through that, just the one who most successfully communicated and got past it.

  26. Rebecca Swenor says

Motivation is very much needed and is welcomed by those who have there mind set on their goal. My experiences in live and what I have already overcome are a big motivator for me.

  27. The key response for a person in this situation is stay close to their man, and let him see they are the reason she is losing weight…that may be stretching it, and a bit sexist, but it may save a big hurt to the relationship.

  28. Celebrate Woman says

Q: What Is the Hardest Thing About Weight Loss?
    Marylou asks:
Having the funds to eat healthier costs more today than ever. No thyroid doesn’t help either.

A from Boyd: There is no question about it, some healthy foods cost more. Strangely, in our perverse food-manufactured world, fresh fruits and vegetables often cost more than food that comes out of a factory.

One of the reasons for this price difference is that most manufactured food is made of mass-produced agricultural products, like corn, soy, wheat, rice, etc., that are very cheap to grow in large quantities. Fresh produce always takes more labor to grow and ship to your table.

But, knowing all that isn’t helpful if you are trying to put healthy food on your table. Yet, even among the less healthy choices, there are alternatives within most product groups, that are healthier than others.

For example, I was shopping for a large jar of peanut butter the other day. I found most of the brands have added sugar, or have high fructose sugar as the second ingredient. But, for the same price, in the same brand, I found a non-sweetened peanut butter that had no high fructose sugar. So, you can argue about whether or not you should eat peanut butter, in this case, but by careful reading of the label you can find healthier alternatives in the same price range. You just have to spend time reading the labels to find better alternatives.

MY QUESTION TO THE GROUP: Have you faced this situation? What do you do to eat healthier, but keep the costs down?

    • Raye Wiedner says

If you can find a farmer’s market you may be able to get fruits and vegetables at better prices. There are also co-ops I’ve found on facebook to buy produce at much better prices. I watch labels and try my best to avoid anything that has high fructose corn syrup. Learn the different names used for sugar, you may be surprised at how much you’re actually eating.

  29. Missy thurman says

I gained 80 pounds fast and ive been checked out I am 40 and thnk its my metabolism. any suggestions

  30. OK, I have to ask…What is a Gazzelle? A moped? A rowing machine. A vibrator? Clue me in?

    • Raye Wiedner says

LOL! You made me laugh and spit coffee on my keyboard……’a vibrator’. That cracked me up!

    • Karen Hinkle says

A gazelle is a extercise machine kinda like sking

      • The key thing is, Missy, what else is going on that could create such a big change in your body? Sleep deprivation. Stress. New foods or new job. Depression. Recent illness? You have to start with what is going on in your life. BUT the key thing, at this poinbt is to NOT DIET?

  31. Celebrate Woman says

Q: What Is the Hardest Thing About Weight Loss?
    Olivia says
: Eating small portions when you’re used to the commercial portion sizes.

A from Boyd: There are a couple of ways your body registers that “You Are Full, Stop eating.”

The first way your body tells you that you are full, as it relates to portion sizes, is what is called “gustatory” fullness. That’s just a fancy word that means your belly is stuffed and you can feel it pushing out your belt line. If you need that type of fulness to “feel full,” you are always going to be gaining weight, and you are kissing weight loss good-bye.

The next type of fullness is when some chemicals your body produces tells your BRAIN you are full. Fresh fruits and vegetables are very good at producing these signals. The key is to eat them slowly so your body has time to produce them and send them to your brain.

Eating anything fast is going to prevent these “full signals” from getting to your brain in time to make your brain tell you to quit eating.

Now, the more cooked your food is, the hotter they are, the less of these “full” signals your body will produce.

Here is a key to “fulness” you may not have heard about: Milk products, and food full of fat NEVER tell your body you are full — think of ice cream (fat + milk), who can stop eating ice cream easily? You just have to limit yourself.

MY QUESTION TO THE GROUP: How do you control your portions?

    • Rebecca Swenor says

The portions are very important. You can measure the food you are eating. If you eat slower you will find you will feel fuller.

    • Karen Hinkle says

I guess that my problem I don’t eat big portions but I eat fast

    • Raye Wiedner says

I have trouble with that ‘I’m full” signal, so I decide how much food I should eat (portion control), and eat a little less than that. I wait about 30 minutes and if I still feel hungry, I can finish it then. I do better when I eat smaller amounts more frequently, so I don’t get tummy aches.

  32. $o pounds is more than a change in metabolism. Something else has got to be contributing to the weight gain.

  33. Celebrate Woman says

Q: What Is the Hardest Thing About Weight Loss?
    Jennifer says
: Being the only heavy person in a house where the rest of your family weighs 130-145 and your at 220.

A from Boyd: Being the only overweight person in a house sucks. Not only do you have to eat differently, but sometimes you feel like everyone is watching everything you eat, and silently criticizing you, even if they say nothing. Does that sound like your situation?

This is when you need to have some “family discussion time,” or serious one on one discussions. Explain your sensitivity to your situation, and ask for their support. If they give it, you have a less difficult road ahead.

But, if they do not give it, you still need to lose weight. That is when your motivation becomes really critical. Get some support outside the home. Get a lot of it. See my earlier discussion about finding support.

But, at the end of the day, weight loss, weight loss that lasts, efforts to lose weight, are all affected by your sense of self worth — do you feel you are worthy of having a healthier, thinner body. If you feel you ARE WORTHY of it, DON’T LET ANY ONE, OR ANY GROUP TAKE IT AWAY.

A healthier slimmer body is your birthright. Claim it. And don’t apologize to anyone, and least of all to yourself, that you are going to make it happen.

  34. The key thing is, Missy, what else is going on that could create such a big change in your body? Sleep deprivation. Stress. New foods or new job. Depression. Recent illness? You have to start with what is going on in your life. BUT the key thing, at this point is to NOT DIET? that will only make it worse, and perhaps permanently so.

Q: What Is the Hardest Thing About Weight Loss?
    MY 2ND OPTION FOR RACHEL:
Find a support group, or create one. If you don’t already have someone that can help you stay motivated, get online.

None of these are perfect. But all of them can give you a place to get started.

The best support group is one you create with people you already know or can pull together online. Perhaps you can find someone here on this Celebrate Woman Today blog.

MY QUESTION TO THE GROUP: What support groups do you all belong to? What has been your experience with online support groups?
